The Indianapolis Clowns were a professional baseball team in the Negro American League. They were the last of the Negro league teams to disband, continuing to play exhibition games between the 1930s-1980s. The Clowns broke barriers! They not only played in front of integrated crowds, but they were also the first professional team to hire a woman to a long term contract to play competitively: Toni Stone, who played second base for the Clowns in 1953.
25x ALL STAR and Home Run King Hank Aaron, who is considered one of the best baseball players ever, signed his first professional contract with the Clowns in 1953 as well. The “Hammer” batted cleanup and played shortstop in Indianapolis.
